Steve and Scott Williams.

Steve Williams started green laning about 20 years ago with a series 2 2.25 diesel

4 years ago Scott Williams started co-driving in winch challenges for a family friend who had a Range Rover classic.

From these beginnings the Williams team have built a challenge truck worthy of any other in the country and now compete whenever possible throughout the UK and Ireland.

They father and son team mainly enter challenges in and around Devon either with Challenge South West or 4x4 Adventures, they have also been to “The Belgium National” and twice to “The Three Peaks Challenge” in Southern Ireland ran by Munster 4x4. They recently attended the “Muddy Truckers” held in Duns Scotland.

W 383 AOR Defender TD5 started life as a standard hard top but has gone through a major transformation. The build consists of:-

The road springs are Bearmach 295lb fitted front and rear with de-carbon shocks supplied by Christian Autos who is the local supplier of all Land Rover parts

Wheels are bead lock Mach 5 from M.J.Lee engineering shod with Fedima 35/10.50/16 scirroco

Front and rear radius arms, steering bars, dislocation cones and rear lowered shock mounts care of QT services.

Rock sliders were purchased from one if the many suppliers at Billing.

The car and driver is protected by a sturdy snug fitting roll cage bought flat pack MFI style from North off road, the cage was then welded together by Dave at chrysalis engineering services in Bristol who is also responsible for the front winch bumper and rear winch mount.

The front end is protected by Farrs bars made and fitted by the one and only Jason Farr a fellow club member from Bristol and West Off Road Club, the cage and Farrs bars have become necessary pieces of armour for anyone competing in and around Devon where the trees are tight together.

However it’s the additions to the car that are not on show that make it stand out. The axles have been up-rated using shafts, cv’s and ARB lockers from Ashcroft transmissions, the auto gearbox was also supplied by Ashcroft and is part of a full kit which comes with every nut bolt and bracket needed to make this conversion work. The auto box is only usually available from Land Rover in the 50th anniversary or NAS spec Defender. All of this along with a D44 full stainless exhaust was fitted by Rob from Tor 4x4 in Glastonbury, Rob not only works on all types of  standard Land Rovers but is very hands on when it comes to off road specials.

The Engine has also received special attention care of Longwell Green Injection Centre they first replaced the injectors to alleviate the standard TD5 flat spot they also fitted a D44 EGR conversion and a Tune-It chip which has transformed the Defender, they also made the snorkel in stainless which passes through the cab and up the back to avoid it being damaged by trees
